Welcome to Backyard Bushcraft.
This site is all about the locations, facilities and things you can do in and around your local area (Surrey, UK in my case) for Bushcraft. Sites and locations are few and far between though, so it also covers some on-line resources and gives some short articles on some of the skills in Bushcrafting. I hope to get some video content on here soon also, which provides a much better medium for showing how things can be done.
Finally, I’ll show how bushcraft doesn’t need to cost you the earth on new and fancy kit. Most things can be got or made for very little outlay. I’ll also try and take you past the survival information and into the more ‘craft’ side of Bushcraft.
Bushcraft isn’t all about going out on a Saturday morning into the woodland with nothing but your trusty penknife and bootlaces. It’s not about foraging and hunting for your supply of food and water, spending 2 hours lighting a fire with a flint and striker, and the rest of the night freezing under a pile of damp logs and leaves, so you can come back Sunday night with tales of daring survival in the face of adversity.
I will grant you that this can be a fun part of the experience, but its not the be all and end all. We’ve all seen the weekend Bear Grylls survivalist wannabes, but If you know a few basic principals of Bushcraft, you should never really be in a ’survival situation’ in the first place!
For me then it’s about getting outside, being sensible, working with nature and only taking enough with me to ensure that the experience is enjoyable. To learn about how things used to be done by those long forgotten artisans, and preserving and respecting the beautiful countryside and nature we have in this country for all future generations.
